Today’s hiring environment is quite exuberant! Although the tech sector is currently experiencing a wave of layoffs, it represents a very small percentage overall. Then, in contrast, there are many other industries hiring at a furious rate. This results in intense competition for top talent.

At Profiles, Inc. we have noticed a significant increase in new client assessment inquiries, specifically the PXT Select Assessment and the overall Talent Management System. Only about 50% of organizations in the United States currently use some form of assessment to support their hiring efforts. It seems that the quest for talent is driving this interest. While there are hundreds of different types of assessments in the marketplace, NOT all assessments are created equal!

When you are using an assessment for hiring purposes it is imperative to make sure that the assessment meets the Department of Labor standards. The SCIENCE matters!

U.S. Department of Labor states that a good assessment measures traits or skills consistently and reliably, and does indeed measure what it claims to measure. In the field of Psychometrics these considerations are known as reliability and validity.

Reliability refers to an assessment measurement of various abilities, traits and interests in a consistent and dependable way both for different individuals and over different periods of time. In short, reliability tells us that everyone is being measured the same way and if individual results differ it is due to behavior differences between them, not differences in the assessment.

Validity pertains to an assessment’s ability to measure the scale accurately and in the way it purports to measure them. It tells us how strongly the assessment items measure what the scale name, definition, conceptual endpoints and report feedback describe.

Additionally, adverse impact is another key area of consideration. The Department of Labor standards state that an assessment should not adversely impact any workforce decision for any demographic group. The PXT Select meets or exceeds Department of Labor standards in each of these three scientific areas, and has been tested on over 37,000 candidates.

The Profiles PXT Select helps corporations with the interview process as well as selecting the right candidates for the job. Once the person has been hired, our clients continue to use the data that is collected with the online questionnaire to optimize their onboarding activities, coach and develop their employees.

Using the Profiles suite of assessments ensures your organization and people will thrive. Hire smarter and retain employees longer by using the PXT Select. The science matters as you compete for top talent in today’s hiring arena.
